Bone and Muscle Health in Perimenopause

Bone and Muscle Health in Perimenopause
Jocelyn Wittstein, MD
This evidence-based session equips clinicians with a comprehensive framework for identifying and managing musculoskeletal changes in perimenopausal and menopausal patients. Dr. Wittstein draws on current research to cover the hormonal mechanisms driving bone loss and sarcopenia, risk stratification using tools such as DEXA and the FRAX calculator, and the musculoskeletal benefits of hormone therapy as supported by the Women's Health Initiative and subsequent meta-analyses.
Participants will also explore evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions including resistance and impact training protocols, targeted nutritional strategies, and supplementation — including hydrolyzed collagen and creatine monohydrate — with direct application to clinical practice.
Special attention is given to higher-risk populations, including women with surgical menopause and those on aromatase inhibitors. Upon completion, clinicians will be prepared to screen earlier, counsel more effectively, and intervene before significant bone mineral density loss occurs.
Applicable to physicians, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, physical therapists, and allied health professionals working with midlife women.
