Prescribing Movement: Yoga and Pelvic PT as a Tool in Perimenopausal Care

Movement is an important part of health during perimenopause, but effective recommendations need to go beyond simply telling patients to exercise.
In this practical Perry Academy session, Ingrid Harm-Ernandes, PT, WCS, and Laura Terry, PT, MPT, E-RYT, explore how pelvic health physical therapy, yoga, strength training, and therapeutic movement can support women throughout the menopausal transition.
The session takes a closer look at pelvic floor and core anatomy and common pelvic health concerns, including urinary and fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, and genitourinary symptoms. It also examines the broader musculoskeletal changes associated with menopause, including loss of muscle mass, changes in bone health, pain, inflammation, and connective tissue changes.
Throughout the session, the focus is on helping clinicians make movement recommendations that are realistic, individualized and sustainable—including helping patients overcome barriers to physical activity and safely build movement into their lives during perimenopause and beyond.
