Sleep Science and Management in Perimenopause for Prescribers

In this course, sleep medicine specialist Dr. Shelby Harris equips prescribers with the tools to recognize, assess, and address sleep disturbances in perimenopausal patients. You’ll explore the hormonal drivers of sleep disruption, learn evidence-based CBT-I interventions, and develop empathetic communication strategies to guide patients toward restorative sleep. The course also covers when to escalate care, including referrals, sleep studies, and medication management, ensuring a comprehensive and patient-centered approach.

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the interrelationship between hormonal fluctuations and sleep disruption during perimenopause, and use this understanding to inform patient education and care planning.

  • Identify appropriate CBT-I interventions that address both physiological and psychological contributors to perimenopausal sleep issues.

  • Demonstrate effective, empathetic communication techniques when discussing sleep challenges, incorporating patient resources and referral options.

  • Evaluate clinical findings to determine optimal timing for advanced interventions, such as specialty referrals, diagnostic sleep studies, or pharmacologic treatment.

    Shelby Harris PsyD, DBSM is a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist in private practice in NY. She is board certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and treats a wide variety of sleep, anxiety and depression issues using evidence-based, non-medication treatments.

    Her self-help book The Women’s Guide to Overcoming Insomnia was published in 2019 by W.W. Norton Books. Dr. Harris holds an academic appointment as Clinical Associate Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Neurology and Psychiatry.
